HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU NEED NEW TIRES?
The penny test
Insert a penny into the tread groove with Lincoln's head pointing down. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head, your tread is below 2/32" — replace immediately. In NJ, that's a failed inspection waiting to happen and a serious wet-road safety risk.
Sidewall cracks or bulges
A bulge in the sidewall means the internal structure is compromised. That tire can blow at any moment. Don't drive on it — change it now.
Vibration at highway speed
Could be an out-of-balance tire, a bent wheel, or a separated belt inside the tire. All three are fixable — but ignoring it leads to uneven wear and eventually a blowout.
Age — even if tread looks OK
Tires older than 6 years should be replaced regardless of tread depth. The rubber compound hardens over time, reducing grip — especially in rain. Check the DOT date code on the sidewall: the last 4 digits are the week and year of manufacture.
NJ inspection requires 2/32" minimum tread depth. If your tires are close to that line, you'll fail. Come in before your inspection date — we can check all four tires in 15 minutes at no charge.
